French words I learned this week – 20/12/2014

I suppose I should really have prepared a seasonal special. A wonderful Christmassy vocab list to help you all with French festive activities. I didn’t do any of that. But look out for a Christmas mystery in a few days time…

Meanwhile, here are my (non-Santa-related) top ten dictionary look-ups from the last couple of weeks.

se dédire v – to go back on one’s word

encoignure nf – corner

inox nm – stainless steel

morne a – gloomy / dull / dismal

rétrécir v – to take in (clothes) / to narrow / to shrink (in the wash)

se gargariser v – to gargle

empoté a – clumsy

alliage nm – alloy

houppette nf – powder puff
