Here we go with my top 10 dictionary checks from the last couple of weeks. Some interesting ones this week – words I was really surprised I didn’t know and a couple that I kicked myself for when I found the translation.
raturer v – cross out / delete
hébété a – dazed, stupefied
manigancer v – to plot
vrombir v – to hum
aspérité nm – bump
charogne nf – carrion
prestidigitateur nm OR prestidigitatrice nf – conjurer
(tour de) prestidigitation nf – conjuring trick
vacarme nm – din / uproar
marasme nm – stagnation
I would add that vrombir can also, amazingly, mean to buzz (insects) and to roar (planes) as in “L’avion vrombissait déjà.”
Brilliant! What an amazing word. Thanks!
