Freelance future?

pen2

I’ve really been enjoying structuring my fiction-writing research into non-fiction posts for this blog. In fact I think it has helped me to retain the information more and I don’t need to check my notebooks as often.

I thought it might be fun to write some more of these articles and so have signed up to a couple of freelance sites like guru.com.

Do any of the freelancers out there have tips on which sites might be the best for getting started?

  1. First off I want to say great blog! I had a quick question in which
I’d like to ask if you don’t mind. I was interested to know how you center yourself and clear your head prior to
writing. I’ve had a hard time clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts
out there. I do take pleasure in writing however it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are lost just
trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or tips? Appreciate it!

    • Hi Colleen, thanks for the compliment and for stopping by here. Tricky question! When I’m working on my novels I listen to music – I assign each character a song that fits their mindset (it might change as the character develops) and listening to that helps me connect with them quickly. Sometimes I’ll listen to that song on repeat while I’m writing and other times I listen to it while I’m walking the dog so I can shape their next chapter in my head before I sit down at the keyboard.

I know other writers who need total silence though so in that sense it’s a personal process.

For writing blogs/articles I struggle more – I guess because there aren’t characters to relate to. I try to have an objective before I write (what do I most want to say about this subject/place/person). Referring back to the objective helps me concentrate.

As I say, probably different for everyone but that’s how I write.

What about you? What kind of writing do you do?

      Andrew
